The Head of the International Office of Hasanuddin University (IO UNHAS), Andi Masyita Irwan, S.Kep., Ners., M.Kep., Ph.D., expressed her gratitude for the active involvement of the participants in participating in the ICP Unhas. She said through ICP activities, participants with different backgrounds and cultures could broaden their horizons, knowledge, and new experiences through various activities that had been carried out. Furthermore, Ms. Masyita hoped the event could be a platform to build networks and friendships among the participants.

“The entire agenda for this week went smoothly; we also received positive responses from the participants. Hopefully, in the future, IO UNHAS will continue to present such programs that provide benefits to participants and encourage the improvement of Unhas’ reputation nationally and globally,” explained Ms. Masyita.

On the same occasion, Jamaluddin Fitrah Alam, Ph.D., the Chairman of the Committee, explained that the ICP participants were lucky to participate in activities that became a medium to get to know UNHAS and South Sulawesi culture more deeply. Through ICP, participants gained insight and knowledge by studying the culture of the people of South Sulawesi, especially the fishing community in Puntondo, Takalar.

ICP Unhas provided an opportunity for talented and enthusiastic participants worldwide to engage in a cultural program for one week. Participants had the chance to get to know the diverse culture of South Sulawesi through the presentation of material and field trips to experience the community’s culture directly.

The Rector of UNHAS, Prof. Jamaluddin Jompa, officially closed the farewell party. In his closing remarks, the Rector mentioned the Makassar proverb “Rampeka Golla Na Kurampeki Kaluku,” which literally means “You give me (brown) sugar, and I give you coconut.” This proverb means we will always be together, just like brown sugar and coconut. In South Sulawesi’s cultures, most of the desserts are made of a combination of brown sugar and coconut. Together, the friendships and memories will be sweet, just like the combination of brown sugar and coconut.

The participants came to South Sulawesi, Indonesia, to understand more about the people and the cultures. Therefore, Prof JJ highlighted that by understanding someone’s cultures we can bring peace to the world. Considering that most of the participants are youth, he surely believes that they will be creating the world a better place to live side by side. There will be no more prejudice about others.
