UNHAS Holds International Conference on Global Public Health and Safety Innovation

The Faculty of Public Health (FKM), Hasanuddin University (UNHAS) successfully held the “2nd International Conference on Safety and Public Health” with the theme “Global Research and Innovation for Safety and Public Health.” The event officially opened on 15 October 2025 and ran until 16 October 2025, at the UNHAS Hotel and Convention, Makassar.

The conference was attended by the Rector of UNHAS, Prof. Dr. Ir. Jamaluddin Jompa, M.Sc., as well as academics, practitioners, and speakers from various countries. This event served as an important forum for sharing knowledge and innovation in the field of safety and public health. The conference opening began with a safety induction by UNHAS Occupational Health and Safety Unit (K3) volunteers, followed by traditional dance performances, the singing of the Indonesian national anthem, a prayer, and a series of official speeches.

In her report, Committee Chair Andi Wahyuni, SKM., M.Kes, said that the conference was attended by more than 300 participants, with 80 participants taking part in oral presentations. The Chair of the Scientific Committee, Prof. Yahya Thamrin, S.KM., M.Kes., MOHS., Ph.D, emphasized his hope that this conference would become a forum for collaboration that not only shared knowledge but also produced innovative research in the field of occupational safety and health.

The Dean of FKM UNHAS, Prof. Sukri Palutturi, SKM, M.Kes., MSc.PH., Ph.D, enthusiastically welcomed the participation of various institutions and affirmed his commitment to public health education and community service in facing global health challenges.

The Rector of UNHAS, Prof. Jamaluddin Jompa, highlighted the importance of the maritime sector in public health issues, emphasizing that worker welfare depends not only on curative services but also on policies, regulations, and promotive and preventive programs.

Representative of the Governor of South Sulawesi, Andi Sudirman Sulaiman, conveyed the importance of exchanging ideas on OSH issues in the era of urban mobility, as well as the readiness of a resilient system based on research and prevention.

On the first day, the conference featured Indonesia’s Deputy Minister of Health II, Dr. Benjamin Paulus Octavianus, Sp.PKR, who presented on “Health Policies and Programs to Realize Indonesia Emas 2045”. He emphasized the Ministry of Health’s main programs, such as free health checks, improving the quality of hospitals, and eradicating tuberculosis (TB).

The Director of Occupational Safety and Health Institutional Development, Drs. Muhammad Idham, M.K.K.K., also presented material on occupational safety culture, ILO policies related to OSH, the 5E approach to building a safety culture, and the Ministry of Manpower’s strategic efforts in addressing OSH issues.

The next session featured Prof. Orawan Kaewbooncho from Mahidol University, who discussed environmental and psychological factors that affect the quality of life of the elderly. Dr. Ismaniza Ismail, Ph.D from Mara University of Technology, raised the topic of psychosocial risks faced by women in the informal sector. Furthermore Prof. dr. Veni Hadju, M.Sc., Ph.D from UNHAS, presented the potential of Moringa Oleifera (moringa leaves) as an intervention to improve the nutritional status and health of pregnant women in Indonesia. Additionally this conference is expected to open up more opportunities for innovative research collaboration in the field of occupational safety and health (OSH). The event continued with oral presentations and scientific discussions on 16 October 2025.
