Vice-Rector for Partnership, Innovation, Entrepreneurship, and Business, Hasanuddin University, Prof Dr Eng Adi Maulana ST MPhil, was selected to represent lecturers from Indonesia in the International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) which is a program of the United States Government, in this case, the Department of Home Affairs, in collaboration with the Embassy of the United State (USA) in several countries.
Annually, the IVLP program conducts a competitive selection of young leaders under the age of 42 who have the potential to become future leaders. This prestigious program has been attended by more than 1000 young leaders from around the world. All participants attend a combined program of classroom sessions and field and industry visits. In addition, participants are given the opportunity to present their ideas in several symposiums and seminars. They also have the opportunity to meet and discuss with several members of parliament and public figures in the United States. They will also visit several universities, institutions and industries according to the program topic.
There are three main fields offered: governance, natural resource and environmental management, and human rights. Candidates for this program must be nominated by the US Embassy in their respective countries. Upon completing the portfolio assessment and interview processes, candidates will be proposed as participants after being approved by a special team.
Prof. Adi Maulana is considered to have made important and significant contributions in the field of natural resource management, especially minerals and energy, and disaster management in Indonesia. Some of his work in the discovery of rare earth metals in Sulawesi are considered essential in the industrial sector. Especially in the era of green energy, his discovery can be an alternative to fossil energy. Prof. Adi Maulana’s real role in the field of disaster has been felt, including the establishment of the South Sulawesi Governor’s regulation on the obligation of disaster education subjects at the high school level in South Sulawesi. With this regulation, South Sulawesi is one of the first provinces in Indonesia to include disaster education as a special subject for high school students.
Prof. Adi Maulana was selected along with 11 other people from Indonesia on the topic of natural resource management and the environment. They will take part in a series of agendas from August 1 to August 19, 2022. All transportation costs, accommodation and allowances from this program will be covered by the US government. As the only academic chosen in IVLP, Prof. Adi Maulana said he feels delighted and honoured.

IVLP program participants will certainly have the opportunity to establish cooperation with many parties in the USA, from government, and industry to universities. As UNHAS Vice Rector for Cooperation, Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Business, Prof. Adi will take advantage of the program and his visit to the USA to expand cooperation with various available parties. Moreover, Unhas as a PTNBH (University with a legal entity) already has a Holding Company under the direction of Prof. Jamaluddin Jompa.
Prof. Adi Maulana will introduce the business model of Unhas management with a new organizational structure in front of a group of American entrepreneurs. Prof. Adi Maulana also plans to visit several universities in the USA and establish partnerships in various fields. He will also provide lectures on natural resource management in Indonesia at several ministries and universities. Some of the universities that will be visited are Northern Illinois University (NIU), Arizona State University (ASU), University of California and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
Currently, Unhas has established cooperation with many universities in Australia, Japan and Europe. With this program, it is expected that cooperation with universities in the USA can be improved in terms of quality and quantity.
“In the future, what we will achieve is the implementation of the MoU that has been signed in the form of research collaboration, exchange of lecturers and students as well as the international Student Mobility program. InsyaAllah, hopefully with this program Unhas will become more global and independent in accordance with one of Unhas’ strategies in achieving the title of World Class University,” he concluded.
