Geography Series: Exploring Liberia Through Culture and Cuisine
The International Office (IO) of Hasanuddin University (UNHAS) once again held its regular program titled Geography Series as part of its ongoing efforts to introduce the cultural and geographical diversity of countries represented by international students on 26 September 2025. This edition of the program featured Liberia, a West African nation rich in history, culture, and unique geographical characteristics.
The event took place at the Prof. Basri Hasanuddin Hall of Graduate School Building of Economic and Business Faculty and was officially opened by Khaeruddin, Ph.D. In his opening remarks, he expressed appreciation for the initiative, highlighting that Geography Series serves as an interactive learning platform that not only broadens students’ geographical knowledge but also fosters cross-cultural understanding within the university community. He emphasized that such programs are essential in nurturing global perspectives and mutual respect for diversity among students.
The Geography Series speaker, Jema Kiazolu, delivered an insightful presentation about her home country. She discussed Liberia’s geographical profile, natural resources, cultural diversity, and its unique path to independence. Jema also shared her reflections on the country’s current challenges and development opportunities, underscoring the critical role of education in shaping a better future for Liberia.
To enrich the cultural experience, the session featured a traditional culinary demonstration where Jema introduced fufu, a staple dish in Liberian cuisine made from cassava flour. She showcased the preparation process and later distributed samples for participants to taste. The session became lively and interactive as participants enthusiastically tried the dish, creating a warm and engaging atmosphere that combined learning with cultural appreciation.
As a token of appreciation, Dra. Harniati presented a certificate of recognition to Jema Kiazolu for her valuable contribution. In her brief remarks, Dra. Harniati expressed gratitude for Jema’s active participation in promoting Liberian culture and sharing her knowledge with the academic community.
The Geography Series is one of UNHAS’ flagship programs supporting the university’s internationalization agenda. Through Geography Series: Liberia, UNHAS reaffirms its commitment to creating an inclusive academic environment where students can learn from one another’s cultures and perspectives, preparing them to become globally-minded citizens who value diversity and collaboration.
