Geo-Series: Uncovering the Beauty of Timor-Leste

One of the International Office (IO)’s monthly programs is the Geo-Series, which provides a platform for international students at Hasanuddin University (UNHAS) to introduce their home countries. The presentation includes their geographical location, culture, cuisine, and tourist attractions. This month’s session featured Ms. Cherry, who presented the beauty of her country, Timor-Leste, on 21 November 2025 in the Prof. Dr. Basri Hasanuddin, M.A. Lecture Hall.

Timor-Leste is located between Australia and Indonesia, with a population of approximately 1.38 million as of 2023. Culturally, Ms. Cherry introduced the country’s traditional musical instrument, the Babadok (a ceremonial drum), and its traditional clothing, the Tais woven cloth. She also presented Timor-Leste’s signature food, such as Batar Daan (a dish made from corn, pumpkin and beans) and highlighted tourist destinations like Cristo Rei of Dili, Atauro Island, and Jaco Island.

The Geo-Series aims to foster cross-cultural understanding and provide opportunities for local students to improve their English communication skills through interactive presentations. Ms. Cherry, an international student from Timor-Leste currently studying at the Faculty of Public Health, began her presentation by playing her country’s national anthem and continued by sharing various cultural aspects, including traditions and unique customs.

To make the session more engaging, she brought and served orange juice to the audience. Ms. Cherry also offered participants the opportunity to taste traditional coffee from Timor-Leste, providing them with an authentic culinary experience. Representing IO, Ms. Harniaty (known as Ms. Arni) presented a token of appreciation and merchandise to Ms. Cherry for her active participation and contribution.

The event concluded with the hope that both international and local students will continue to participate in future Geo-Series sessions to strengthen intercultural understanding and support a globally minded academic environment at UNHAS.
