Exploring Philippine Tourism: A Cross-Cultural Learning Experience for Tourism Students of UNHAS

The Tourism Study Program of Hasanuddin University (UNHAS) once again provides an inspiring international learning opportunity through a special online lecture titled “National & International Tourism: The Philippine Experience.” The session features Mr. Abelardo R. Cruz Jr., a Physics and Chemistry teacher from the Philippines, who shares valuable insights on international tourism in the Philippines as well as his personal experiences living in Indonesia. This class is part of the National and International Tourism course series designed for Tourism students of the 2025 batch. It aims to broaden students’ understanding of tourism from both national and global perspectives through direct engagement with international speakers.

Guided by Dr. Dirk Sandarupa, M.Hum., MCE, lecturer and tourism practitioner, the session encourages students to actively engage in discussions about the development, challenges, and cultural dynamics of Philippine tourism, and how these experiences relate to Indonesia’s tourism landscape. The online class will take place on Wednesday, 29 October 2025, at 20:00 CIT via Zoom, as part of the faculty’s initiative under the Impactful Diktisaintek program to foster cross-cultural understanding and global competence among tourism students. “Learning directly from practitioners abroad gives our students a broader and comparative insight into how tourism operates across different cultural and national contexts,” said Dr. Dirk Sandarupa.

This event reflects the commitment of UNHAS’s Tourism Study Program to connect students with global perspectives and to strengthen international academic collaboration in the field of tourism.
