Hasanuddin University (UNHAS) celebrated a significant milestone in academic excellence as Dian Sidik Arsyad, a faculty member in the Department of Epidemiology, Faculty of Public Health (FKM), successfully defended his dissertation titled “Cardiovascular Disease Prevention in Indonesia: Epidemiology, Risk Factors, Organization of Care, and Prevention” at Utrecht University on January 14, 2025.

This remarkable event highlighted the growing recognition of UNHAS’s academic contributions on the global stage, with Prof. Sukri Palutturi, SKM, M.Kes., MSc.PH, Ph.D., Dean of FKM, serving as an esteemed examiner and opponent. Invited by Promotor Prof. Doevendans, Prof. Sukri’s participation underscored his pivotal role in advancing public health research and education, particularly in cardiovascular health.

Dian Sidik Arsyad’s dissertation showcased groundbreaking insights into cardiovascular disease prevention in Indonesia, addressing epidemiology, modifiable risk factors, and the readiness of community health systems. His research, spanning five years and four months, produced eight Scopus-indexed publications, including studies in BMC Public Health, Frontiers in Nutrition, and Nutrients, cementing his reputation as a leading academic in the field.

During the defense, Dian impressed the panel with his mastery of the subject and his ability to translate findings into practical implications. Prof. Sukri commended his work, stating, “Dian’s research bridges critical gaps in public health policy and practice, particularly in the fight against cardiovascular diseases in Indonesia.” He challenged Dian to further explore the broader impacts of his findings on national health strategies, particularly at community health centers and hospitals.

The examination panel, which included distinguished professors from Utrecht University, praised Dian’s dedication and the mentorship provided by Prof. Sukri. A fellow examiner noted, “Prof. Sukri’s contributions are invaluable, bridging research and actionable strategies to address pressing health challenges.”

The event was graced by the presence of Mariska Dwianti Dhanutirto, Deputy Chief of Mission at the Indonesian Embassy in the Netherlands, further underlining the significance of this academic achievement for Indonesia.

The defense concluded with a laudation from the Co-Promotor, celebrating Dian’s academic journey and his commitment to improving public health. A post-defense reception provided an opportunity for dignitaries, faculty, and attendees to engage in meaningful discussions, fostering international collaboration.

This event also spotlighted Prof. Sukri’s unwavering dedication to global academic engagement. His leadership has propelled FKM UNHAS to the forefront of public health education and research, inspiring future health professionals to embrace international collaboration in tackling global health challenges.
