The Rektor of Universitas Hasanuddin, Prof. Dr. Ir. Jamaluddin Jompa, M.Sc., welcomed the Consortium Team for “4D-REEF (Past, Present, and future of coral reefs in the coral triangle)” at Rector Meeting Room, Level 8th Rectorate Building, on Thursday (28/7/2022).
The Consortium Team of 4D-REEF was led by Dr. Willem Renema (Group Leader Marine Biodiversity), the leader of tens of researchers from 14 different institutions across Europe and Southeast Asia. Two researchers from the Faculty of Marine Science and Fisheries of Universitas Hasanuddin joined the team, including Prof. JJ and Prof. Dr.Ir. Rohani Ambo Rappe.
Prof. JJ and the team discussed their research project that have been postponed 2 years ago due to Pandemic Covid-19. They planned to conduct a data collection project that will take place on Spermonde Archipleago.
“This is a valuable opportunity for us so that we can discuss our project in person, not in a virtual manner. We hope this joint research project can produce new findings and results related to the existence of coral reef that has significant potential in the future, especially in dealing with climate change and pollution,” explained Prof. JJ.
D-REEF is going to use paleo-ecology data and current data to study the coral reefs in murky water habitats. The coral reef may possess the capability to withstand the environmental pressure and act as protection and refugia for coral reefs in warm climate periods.
