Strengthening Ties through Public Diplomacy: Hasanuddin University Hosts Consul General of Korea
On September 6, 2025, the Faculty of Cultural Sciences (FIB), Hasanuddin University (UNHAS), held a public lecture on the theme “Public Diplomacy: Building Bridges between Two Nations”, delivered by Mr. Kang Wongjoon, Consul General of the Republic of Korea. In his lecture, Mr. Kang highlighted the importance of utilising popular public figures as a medium of diplomacy, citing examples such as Shin Tae Yong, the former head coach of Indonesia’s national football team, and Megawati, a volleyball player who has recently gained popularity in Korea.
Mr. Kang was accompanied on this visit by Mr. Le Hangsoon, Director of the Korean Foundation. Their arrival was warmly welcomed by the Dean of the Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Prof. Dr. Andi Muhammad Akhmar, along with the Vice Dean for Partnership, Research, Innovation, and Alumni Affairs, Dr. Wahyuddin, M. Hum. The event reflected the spirit of cultural exchange and the strengthening of relations between Indonesia and Korea.
Before the lecture, discussions were held regarding potential collaboration between Korea and the Faculty of Cultural Sciences, particularly focusing on the establishment of a Korean Language Study Program at UNHAS. At present, the Korean language is offered only as an elective course in several study programs at the Faculty. The session also involved Mr. Muhammad Syahrum from the Korean Corner, who served as interpreter throughout the event.
