The COVID-19 pandemic is causing significant changes to the lifestyle of individuals. The decrease in physical activity is one of the impacts of lifestyle changes due to this pandemic. Limited access to play to the surrounding field or park due to social restrictions is also a contributing factor to the decrease in physical activity among children. Physical activity is an important thing to pay attention to at school-age children because physical activity can improve not only physical health but also mental health, as well as improve cognitive function and academic performance.
This is the background of the holding of community service program activities by the Physiotherapy Undergraduate Study Program, Faculty of Nursing, Hasanuddin University in the form of Gymnastics and Education for Elementary School Age Children. The absence of access to the elementary school does not prevent the community service team from achieving the goals of this activity. This activity received support from the head of the Bulu-Bulu RT / RW, Kapasa Raya Village, Makassar, making it possible to gather elementary school-age children in the area. This activity was attended by the Head of the Physiotherapy Undergraduate Study Program, FKep Unhas, Head of RT Bulu-Bulu, 60 elementary school-aged children, and several parents who accompany their children. Regardless of a large number of participants in this service activity, the community service team continues to pay attention to health protocols to prevent transmission of COVID-19 through the distribution of masks and hand sanitizers to all participants, accompanied by limiting the distance between participants.
This community service activity was held on Sunday, September 20, 2020, in Kapasa Raya Village, Makassar. This activity is also part of a series of activities for the 3rd Anniversary of the Hasanuddin University Faculty of Nursing. In addition to education about posture and physical activity in children, the community service team also did exercise together to educate children and their parents on how to do physical activity in their respective homes. Through this activity, it is hoped that the level of physical activity in children can be increased even though at this time of the pandemic.
