When the Vice Governor Gorontalo Province Dr. Drs. Idris Rahim M.M. and his group visited the Unhas Hospital, 17 June 2016, the radioactive iridium equipment was shown to the visitors that were present. The equipment is highly protected and free from public interactions.

When the group that consisted of the Vice Governor and the Secretary of Gorontalo Province, Prof. Dr. Ir. Winarni Monoarfa, M.S. that were directly accompanied by the Unhas Rector Prof. Dr. Dwia Aries Tina Pulubuhu, M.A. visited the room, there was a patient that was undergoing his treatment. The Ontological Specialist doctor Suherman Hadi Saputra explained to those present of the working mechanisms of the German made treatment facility.

Solidifying its status as the Center for Cancer Treatment in Indonesia, Unhas Hospital introduced the “Brachy Therapy” (BT) made in German, with the aims of cancer treatment utilizing nuclear radiation. The radiation is then injected into the cancer tissues with a dose that adapt with the cancer volume.

“The strength is higher. The working system is sourced from radiations that are shot to the cancer tissues using radioactive iridium with three dimensions,” stated dr. Suherman Hadi Saputra, Sp.Onk.Rad., an ontological specialist doctor in RS Unhas, accompanied by the President Director of RS Unhas Dr. dr. Andi Fachruddin Benyamin, Sp.PD, KHOM, when met in the RS Unhas, Tuesday (14/6).

The utilization of BT is still known as rare in Indonesia. The tumor located at the internal parts of one's body will be shot with radioactive iridium with the strength of 10 Linac. Linac is used to handle cervical cancer. In South Sulawesi, based on the data available, most of the patients suffer from a head neck. The cancer is sourced from a virus that stimulates from the eating patterns. Besides that, also substantially high are patients of breast cancer, lung cancer, and gut cancer.

According to Suherman, BT is mostly compatible for cervical cancer, and for sarcoma classifications, including tumors that appear in the muscle tissues. BT is indicated for patients that require treatment with high dosages and somewhat simple. In Indonesia, only RS Unhas, RS Sutomo Surabaya, and Siloam Jakarta that facilitates such treatment.
