Faculty of Animal Science of Universitas Hasanuddin Held The 3rd ICAST International Conference

Universitas Hasanuddin (Unhas), through the Faculty of Animal Science, held an International Conference entitled "The 3rd International Conference of Animal Science and Technology (ICAST)". This conference has the theme "Animal Production and Sustainable Agriculture for Food Security in The Tropical Environment."

The activity took place virtually through the zoom meeting application and live streaming on the Faculty of Animal Science Youtube channel at 08.30 Wita on Tuesday (03/11).

There were three professors presented as speakers; they were Assoc. Prof. Naoki Isobe, Assoc. Prof. Linh Bui, Ph.D., Assoc. Prof. Anjas Asmara Samsudin, DVM., Ph.D., Prof. Han Jian Lin, and Prof. Dr. Ir. Djoni, Prawira Rahardija, M.Sc., IPU.

Starting the activity, the Chairman of the Committee, Dr. Ir. Sri Purwanti, S.Pt., M.Sc., IPM., ASEAN Eng., explained that the 3rd ICAST was carried out online, which was adjusted to the conditions of the Covid-19 pandemic. Regarding the selection of its theme, Purwanti hoped that the discussion topic would increase understanding of the importance of Indonesian local livestock, which is Indonesia's wealth and must continue to be preserved.

"ICAST 2020 is a series of international seminars that have been held since 2018. All incoming and selected papers will be published in the Journal and International Conference Proceeding Indexed by Scopus. Our previous conference was published in IOP Publishing," Purwanti explained.

On the same occasion, Dean of the Faculty of Animal Science, Prof. Dr. Ir. Lellah Rahim, M.Sc., IPU., said that the Faculty of Animal Science as a stakeholder in the livestock business contributes to developing wise technology.

This conference is expected to be a platform for discussing and studying technological developments in the form of native technology, local wisdom, animal welfare, and the latest technologies that can maintain human survival.

"This year, 285 papers were collected from various researchers. In the future, we hope that forum like this will increase joint research collaboration. Moreover, we are grateful to the University leaders and all other elements involved who have supported the implementation of this activity," explained. Prof. Lellah.

Prof. dr. Muh Nasrum Massi, Sp.MK, Ph.D., the Vice-Rector for Research and Innovation of Unhas, officially opened the activity. In his remarks, he appreciated the implementation of the activity, which is certainly part of the contribution efforts to increase Unhas Scopus indexed publications' target.

"In this year, the publication target of Unhas has been exceeded. We are targeting 1750 publications, but we have exceeded this achievement with 1752 publications. Therefore, we will continue to increase it until the end of the year. Things like this will affect the assessment indicators of Unhas, which can support Unhas to get into the top 1000 in WCU, "explained Prof. Nasrum.

After the official opening, the activity continued with the presentation from the speakers.

Prof. Han Jian Lin (International Livestock Research Institut, Nairobi, Kenya) delivered the topic on "Livestock Genomic Adaptation to Climate Changes Via Long-Term Natural Selection Within and/or Historical Introgression Between Species."

In his presentation, he examined that climate change is one of the main threats to the sustainability of an extensive livestock system, where climate change such as heat stress will have an impact on livestock productivity, including reduced production of milk, meat, and eggs and impaired reproductive efficiency and immunity.

Prof. Anjas Asmara Samsudin, DVM., Ph.D., (Universiti Putra Malaysia) delivered another topic related to "Fostering Potential Beneficial Microorganisms for Livestock Production." In general, he discussed microorganisms that can be used in the livestock production process and affect the quality of livestock production.

This activity is divided into two sessions, with each different speakers in each session. The activity was attended by approximately 200 participants from various institutions or institutions and is scheduled to last until 18.00 WITA. (* / Mir)
