Teachers who keep learning
Every 5 October, the world marks World Teachers’ Day; this year is the 60th anniversary of the ILO/UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers. At Universitas Hasanuddin, teaching means never stopping learning, from the professor’s lectern to working alongside schoolteachers in Bulukumba and Fakfak.

Law that protects
Five Faculty of Law professors inaugurated on 28 September 2026 examine corruption as a human rights violation, protection for children in conflict with the law, Land Bank governance, and the regulation of foreign doctors.
From root canals to honeybees
Five professors inaugurated on 26 August 2026 presented research on root-canal bacteria, natural remedies for periodontal disease, endodontic biomaterials, honeybees, and Australian literature as a space for cultural dialogue.
From Bugis politeness to edible packaging
Prof. Kamsinah proposed a Value-Saving Model of Politeness drawn from Bugis cultural data, while three professors from the Faculty of Agricultural Technology work on rice post-harvest technology, agricultural machinery, and edible packaging.
Geo-AI and local rice
Four professors inaugurated on 11 May 2026 brought ideas ranging from Geo-AI for sustainable development and the biotechnology of South Sulawesi’s local rice to ethics in aesthetic dentistry and children’s oral health.
The internet for education
Prof. Muhammad Niswar, the first SOI Asia network operator at Unhas since 2002, received the Suguru Yamaguchi Memorial Award 2026 and has helped shape a regional curriculum and train internet engineers across countries through the APIE program.
Preparing the next lecturers
44 young lecturers, freed to study
Unhas temporarily released 44 young master’s-level lecturers from teaching and administrative duties so they could focus on intensive IELTS training, a step toward doctoral study at leading universities abroad. “This program reflects the university’s commitment to young lecturers, so that they have a greater opportunity to pursue doctoral studies abroad,” said Rector Prof. Jamaluddin Jompa.
42 young lecturers prepare for PhDs
After a placement test taken by 114 participants, 42 young lecturers from across faculties joined a workshop to prepare for doctoral study and LPDP scholarships.
To Australia for food systems
Marine science lecturer Jamaluddin Fitrah Alam, Ph.D., was selected to represent Indonesia in an ASEAN–Australia leadership program on food systems with participants from 12 countries.
Disaster science at Tohoku
Geophysics lecturer Saaduddin, Ph.D., joined the APRU Multi-Hazards Summer School 2026 at Tohoku University with about 50 participants from more than 20 countries.
A campus that learns from schools
At UPT SDN 5 Appasarenge in Bulukumba, a Faculty of Nursing team taught 50 pupils in grades 4 to 6 to play games in healthy, responsible ways through the G-STAMP program, with the principal and teachers attending. In East Fakfak, the Patriot Expedition Team introduced a Solar Learning Kit to teachers from SD Weri, SD Saharey, and SMP Fakfak Timur and heard first-hand that one school’s internet could only be used from about 09:00 to 11:00 because it depends on solar power.
Changing how students learn
20 credits beyond the study program
Under the 2023 Curriculum, Competency Strengthening Courses (MKPK) require students to earn 20 credits, or 10 in the health disciplines, outside their study program, including beyond the university.
Speaking practice with FLOW Speak
Unhas built the FLOW Speak app into its English courses; in 2025, 28 of 70 English classes used it to train students’ speaking skills.
Teaching factories for fisheries schools
The Faculty of Vocational Studies and BPPMPV KPTK are preparing to strengthen the Teaching Factory at fisheries vocational high schools, including the processing of products such as marinated fish.
